Michael J. Tonsing,
Of Counsel Mike Tonsing is associated with the Tuttle Law Offices in an “of counsel” capacity. Having passed the California Bar in 1976, he is an experienced trial lawyer in both State and Federal courts. He is a former member of the United States Attorney’s office in San Francisco, where he represented the United States in both civil and criminal matters. His experience includes arguing both jury trials and bench trials before various U.S. District Courts. He has successfully argued before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of the Department of Justice. And, he has also successfully argued against the Justice Department before the U.S. Court of International Trade. Mr. Tonsing is a former Supreme Court Fellow (a program jointly sponsored by the American Bar Association and the Ford Foundation), having served on the staff of the late Chief Justice of the United States, Warren E. Burger. As a Supreme Court Fellow he won the Justice Tom C. Clark Award for meritorious service. He serverd as president of the Northern District of California Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (“FBA”) for two terms. During his second year as president, the Chapter won the FBA’s Best Chapter in the Nation award. He has also served as the FBA’s Ninth Circuit vice president (two terms). For the last decade he has written a monthly column on technology and the law for The Federal Lawyer, the journal of the national-level FBA, and served three terms on the California State Bar’s Law Practice Management and Technology Executive Committee and on the Executive Committee of its Public Law Section. He has been involved in legal education at one level or another for most of the last 30-plus years and is a frequent speaker on a myriad of legal topics before various trade associations and professional groups.
