Steel Update of April 16, 2002

Exclusion Applications to 201 Steel Safeguards Must Be Filed By May 20th. Commerce Department Deadline to Review Requests for Exclusions, July 3rd. Read more.

U.S. 201 Steel Safeguard Implementation Updates. Since our March 22nd update, there have been several important developments by agencies implementing the 201 Safeguard duties. Read more.

USTR Issues Exclusions For Certain Steel Products. On April 4th, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) published to the Federal Register its determination that exclusion of certain steel articles will not undermine the goals of Proclamation 7529. Read more.

Foreign Developments in Response to 201 Steel Duties. The EU, China, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Norway have all requested consultations under the WTO's dispute settlement procedure, while Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and Venezuela have further requested involvement in the talks. Read more.

Related Steel News:  Antidumping, Countervailing Petitions Filed on Oil Country Tubular Steel Goods From 14 Countries. On March 29, 2002, oil country tubular steel goods were the subject of fourteen antidumping (AD) duty petitions and one countervailing (CV) duty petition were filed with the Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC).  Read more.

Background

President Bush’s March 5th Proclamation imposed the section 201 duties and/or tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) for up to three years, and called on Customs to implement a steel product licensing system for the close monitoring of steel imports.  For additional background please read our previous newsletters published to our website:
